Three Female Caregivers to Tribute During National Women’s History Month
March is National Women’s History Month. In honor of this event, there are three women who earned a place in history for their dedication as caregivers. Take some time to learn more about how they were amazing caregivers.

Florence Nightingale
A nurse by trade, Florence Nightingale is one of the history’s best-known caregiver. As a young woman, she spent hours tending to the impoverished around her family estate. It led to her dream to become a nurse, something her parents frowned upon.
When disease and infection were rampant during the Crimean War, she gathered a team of nurses to improve the conditions of patients within the base. Her actions reduced unnecessary deaths and led to a movement to change healthcare standards.
Eleanor Roosevelt
Some know Eleanor Roosevelt as a former first lady. At the age of 18, she volunteered to teach immigrant children. She also pushed for reform to end unsafe practices and conditions in factories and manufacturers. When she married Franklin Roosevelt, she likely had no idea she’d become his caregiver when he was stricken with polio and left paralyzed.
Despite his condition, she urged him to get back into politics. He would become president, but she needed to travel in his place. She advocated for the poor, women’s rights, laborers, and civil rights. All of this while also being a family caregiver to her husband and several children.
Lou Xiaoying
Here’s a caregiver you may not be as familiar with. She deserves praise for all she’s done advocating for children. Lou Xiaoying was a poor trash collector in her small Chinese village. In 1972, she was doing her job and found an infant girl in the trash. In a country where there was a limit on how many children you could have, it wasn’t uncommon for families to dispose of extra children in any way possible. She couldn’t ignore a child in need, even if she lacked the money to really care for an extra child.
Over the decades, Lou Xiaoying would find and take in more than two dozen infants. About 12 couldn’t be saved, but the others were raised by Lou Xiaoying or rehomed with her friends and family members. Her story gained national attention after she was hospitalized with heart and kidney failure at the age of 88. At that point, her most recent rescued infant had grown into a healthy, happy 7-year-old boy.
