Stay Inside
It’s safer if he stays inside. Lightning strikes can be deadly. Even if he hasn’t seen lightning and only hears thunder, he needs to stay inside. It’s best if he’s above ground level in case there is flooding. If he sees water coming into his home, he should not go outside and instead head for an upper floor, attic, or roof if needed.
While he’s inside, he should stay away from windows just in case the glass shatters. It’s also a good idea to stay away from a fireplace that has a glass window or a woodstove with a glass door. He should stay out of a shower and off the toilet during a thunderstorm as electricity can travel through water. It will be safe again when the thunder ends.
If heavy winds or tornado warnings are in place, he should head for the lowest floor in his home and a room or hallway that is in the center of the home and away from windows and exterior doors. Laying low with his hands over his head is advised. Being under a heavy table is even better if there is one in a basement or center of the home.
Be Prepared for Power Outages
A severe storm can knock power out. In an extended outage, your dad needs to have things to eat and drink that don’t require refrigeration or cooking. Peanut butter, crackers, granola bars, and dried fruit are all good options to keep on hand. Water bottles are also good to keep around.
In addition to food, he should have flashlights to help him get around the house. A battery-powered camping lantern is perfect for lighting a whole room. Games, cards, and books give him things to do until the power returns.
Have Someone Check on Him After the Storm
Make sure you have people available to check on your dad regularly. After a storm, it’s very important that someone is checking to make sure he and his home are okay.
