While summer can be an enjoyable time of the year in many parts of the country due to the warm weather and bright sunshine, many people look forward to the coming of fall.  For your elderly loved one, fall can be a wonderful season because of the cooler, milder weather and the beautiful fall foliage.  September 27-October 3 is observed as National Fall Foliage Week, a week to take some time to appreciate the beautiful sights of fall.  To celebrate National Fall Foliage Week with your elderly loved one this year, why not try some of these fun and relaxing activities?

Visit a Park or Nature Trail

A great way to see the fall foliage up close is to visit a park or nature center and take a relaxing walk.  Your loved one will be able to see the changing fall colors as well as get in some healthy physical activity.  In many parts of the country, this time of the year brings mild weather that is pleasant for walking so your loved one will not have to worry about getting too hot or too cold.  Be sure to come prepared, however, with a light jacket, water bottle, and bug spray.  If your loved one enjoys this activity, consider scheduling a few more visits to the local park or nature trail before this fast and fleeting season ends.

Take a Drive

Taking drive through wooded areas where the trees grow tall can be a fun and pleasant way to observe the fall foliage.  It is a nice way to escape the house and it is a perfect outing for elderly adults who may have trouble walking or standing for long periods of time.  You can even schedule in some stops along the way to enjoy the gifts of the season such as a pumpkin patch, farmer’s market, or roadside fruit and vegetable stand.

Visit an Apple Orchard

While many trees are changing color, one type of tree is bursting with ripening fruit during the fall – the apple tree.  This season, consider visiting an apple orchard and picking some fresh apples that your loved one can snack on or bake with at home.  At an apple orchard, your loved one will be able to observe the fall sights, pick fresh and healthy apples, and take a relaxing walk among the trees.
