Winter Storm Jonas

Winter Storm

Winter Storm Jonas brought some of the biggest snowfall we have seen for our area.  Snowfall totals for parts of Virginia range from anywhere between 29 inches and 39 inches.  We at LivinRite Winter-Stormwere certainly impacted by these record high snowfalls, but as always the show must go on. Whether it is rain, sleet, or snow LivinRite is always available 24 hours a day 7 days a week to serve those who need care. Here are some tips to help seniors deal with the current weather conditions.

  1. We are in this together.  Start a neighborhood team to help shovel snow for elderly, disabled, and those who are unable to shovel all of that heavy snow.
  2. Make sure to keep a backup supply of your daily medication
  3. Make sure medical equipment and assistive devices (such as canes, walkers, wheelchairs, lifts, oxygen tanks, ect.) are easy to locate.
  4. When clearing snow from your business make sure that all accessible parking spaces for people with disabilities are cleared of snow and ice.
  5. Make sure to not leave your trash and Recycing Bins at the end of the street until snow plows have already serviced your street.
  6. If it is possible, move all cars from street parking.  Objects like parked cars severely hamper a plow or heavy equipment driver’s ability to clear the roads.
  7. Prioritize clearing snow in front of fire hydrants in your neighborhood.  In the event of a fire emergency crews will not be able to see or access a hydrant if it is blocked by large amounts of snow.
  8. Shovel snow into your yard and not the street to minimize the problem of the snowplow covering your driveway with the snow after you have just shoveled it.
  9. Keep the opening of storm drains clear of snow and debris to help alleviate potential flooding and to protect the environment.  However, at no time should anyone enter a storm drain to remove any debris.
  10. Remove all portable basketball hoops, hockey goals, or other sports equipment from the road when possible.
  11. Volunteer to lend your equipment to others in need such as shovels, snow blowers, salt, and plows for a community effort.
  12. Driving on freshly fallen snow is dangerous and condenses the snow into compact sheets that turn to ice, making it much harder and more expensive to remove.  If possible, do not attempt to drive before the plows come to your neighborhood.
